What Carbon Black Is
Carbon black is an engineered carbon powder produced by the incomplete combustion or thermal decomposition of hydrocarbons. Unlike ordinary soot, it is manufactured under tightly controlled conditions to achieve a consistent particle size and structure, which gives it predictable performance in industrial applications.
Its most important job is as a reinforcing filler in rubber, above all in tires. Adding carbon black to rubber compounds dramatically improves durability, tensile strength, and resistance to abrasion and ultraviolet light. It also serves as a pigment in inks, paints, coatings, and plastics, and as a conductive additive in some electronic and energy-storage materials.
How Carbon Black Is Traditionally Made
Conventional carbon black production burns heavy petroleum feedstocks such as oil or natural gas under limited oxygen, then captures and grades the resulting particles. The process is effective but carbon-intensive: it consumes fossil feedstocks and emits carbon dioxide as a byproduct of the very combustion that creates the product.
Recovered Carbon Black from Pyrolysis
Pyrolysis provides an alternative source. When end-of-life tires are heated without oxygen, the rubber decomposes into oil, gas, steel, and a carbon-rich solid. That solid, once refined and milled, is recovered carbon black, or rCB. It originates from material that was already carbon — recycled from waste rather than freshly extracted from fossil feedstocks.
rCB shares many of the reinforcing and pigment properties of virgin carbon black. Because it comes from a waste stream, producing it displaces the need for new fossil-derived material and lowers the carbon footprint of the end product. This is the core reason the tire and rubber industries are increasingly evaluating rCB as a drop-in or partial substitute.
Where Recovered Carbon Black Is Used
rCB finds demand across the same markets as virgin carbon black. In rubber compounding it reinforces new tires, industrial rubber goods, and technical parts. In plastics it provides pigmentation and UV stabilization, and in inks and coatings it delivers deep black color while improving conductivity where needed.
For a manufacturer, the value of rCB depends on consistency. Feedstock control, reactor conditions, and post-processing — milling, pelletizing, and surface treatment — determine whether the recovered material meets a given specification. This is where a well-engineered tire pyrolysis operation separates commodity carbon from specification-grade rCB.
A Circular Route to a Critical Material
Carbon black is essential to modern manufacturing, but its conventional supply chain is tied to fossil feedstocks.
