TSA Data Strengthens Case for Mandatory Tyre Stewardship
Tyre Stewardship
New consumer research has strengthened the case for mandatory tyre stewardship in Australia, showing overwhelming public support for national regulation of end-of-life tyre management.
Strong Public Backing
A YouGov survey of more than a thousand vehicle owners for Tyre Stewardship Australia found broad support for national rules requiring all used tyres to be collected and recycled, alongside greater industry responsibility and higher penalties for illegal dumping.
Low Confidence in the Current System
The research also revealed low confidence that used tyres are disposed of responsibly, with many consumers reporting they received no information at point of sale about the fate of their old tyres.
A Willingness to Pay
Respondents indicated a willingness to pay a reasonable per-tyre fee to guarantee responsible management, yet the current voluntary scheme receives a fraction of that from importers, sharpening calls for a whole-of-supply-chain mandatory model.
Inquiry Underway
The findings land as a parliamentary committee inquiry into the Australian Tyre Industry considers reform, with the data widely seen as removing remaining arguments against regulation.

Turn Mandatory Stewardship Into Reliable Feedstock
A mandatory scheme means predictable volumes of end-of-life tyres that need processing capacity.
Klean Industries builds the pyrolysis and recovery infrastructure that turns collected waste tyres into recovered materials.
