Tire Recycling Firm Ecolomondo Enters Creditor Protection

Thermal Decomposition

A tire recycling company operating in Hawkesbury, Ontario has entered creditor protection, raising questions about the future of its thermal decomposition plant.

Creditor Protection Filing

Ecolomondo is insolvent and restructuring under the federal Companies’ Creditors Arrangement Act, having been granted protection in Québec Superior Court on May 21. The initial order provides a stay of proceedings and establishes temporary financing to carry out the restructuring.

Thermal Decomposition Technology

The company focuses on proprietary Thermal Decomposition Process technology, which recovers high-value commodities from scrap tire waste, including recovered carbon black, tire-derived oil, syngas, fibre and steel. Construction of the Hawkesbury plant began in 2019.

Workforce and Monitor

Ecolomondo employs 30 people, 27 of them at the Hawkesbury plant. Court-appointed monitor KPMG will oversee the restructuring and report its progress to the court, while the filing is supported by principal creditor Export Development Canada.

Leadership and Path Forward

The company owes EDC $54,555,097 as its sole secured creditor, alongside 69 unsecured creditors. Seven directors resigned on May 21, leaving Lynn Côté as sole director, with Jean-François Labbé serving as interim chief executive.
