RDF / Solid Recovered Fuel Boiler

Solid Recovered Fuel Boiler

Refuse-derived fuel and solid recovered fuel are non-recyclable waste prepared into a consistent, energy-dense fuel, and a boiler designed for them burns that fuel to raise steam for power and heat. It is the final, useful step for waste that cannot be recycled, recovering its energy instead of burying it.

What RDF and SRF Are

RDF is the combustible fraction separated from municipal or industrial waste, shredded and sorted to a consistent size, while solid recovered fuel is a higher-grade version produced to a tighter specification for its heat content, moisture and chlorine. Both turn an otherwise valueless waste into a feedstock a modern boiler can burn predictably.

How an RDF Boiler Works

The boiler combusts the prepared fuel on a moving grate or in a fluidized bed, raising high-pressure steam for electricity and process heat. Because the fuel can contain contaminants, the flue gas passes through a full emissions-treatment train, meeting the air-quality limits that apply to burning waste-derived fuel.
