Rathi Group and ITTAC Partner to Improve Recovered Carbon Black

RCB Quality Improvement

Rathi Group has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Indian Tyre Technical Advisory Committee (ITTAC) to strengthen technical collaboration around recovered carbon black and its responsible integration into tyre applications, with RCB quality improvement at the centre of the effort.

A Structured Evaluation Framework

The agreement establishes a framework to evaluate, standardise and enhance the material properties of recovered carbon black so that it delivers consistent performance in tyre manufacturing. The collaboration draws on ITTAC’s technical expertise for detailed material characterisation, performance benchmarking against virgin carbon black, compound formulation optimisation, and the development of standards and validation protocols.

Addressing Known Challenges

Recovered carbon black is known to vary in particle structure, ash content, surface chemistry and reinforcement efficiency. The structured industry-and-academia engagement is designed to confront those technical challenges directly, so that rCB can meet the mechanical performance, durability and safety requirements expected in tyres rather than serving as a low-grade filler.

An Industry-Wide Platform

The initiative is facilitated by the Automotive Tyre Manufacturers’ Association (ATMA) in coordination with ITTAC, bringing together leading tyre manufacturers, technical specialists and research institutions on a single platform. Rathi Group has credited this collaboration for accelerating a science-led approach to circular materials for the tyre sector and for moving towards tyre-to-tyre material recovery that supports decarbonisation in rubber compounding.

Why It Matters

Recovered carbon black from end-of-life tyre pyrolysis is increasingly viewed as a strategic feedstock that can cut Scope 3 emissions and improve material circularity. Indian pyrolysis companies are seen as central to the future of tyre recycling, provided the sector raises its standards and leaves behind the reputation earned from some traditional practices, and this partnership is a concrete step in that direction.
