How Efficient Is Plastic Pyrolysis? Gauging the Recovery Route
Plastic Pyrolysis Efficiency
Efficiency means different things for different routes, and plastic pyrolysis has to be judged against its real alternatives: landfilling, incineration and mechanical recycling. Against each, pyrolysis’s efficiency is a different story.
Against landfilling, pyrolysis is efficient almost by definition — it recovers oil, gas and char from material that would otherwise be buried. Against incineration, it recovers products rather than just heat, so more of the material’s value is retained. Against mechanical recycling, the two routes split the stream: mechanical is more efficient for clean, single-polymer plastic, while pyrolysis is the efficient choice for the mixed and contaminated fraction mechanical rejects.
Efficiency Is Feedstock-Specific
The honest gauge of pyrolysis efficiency is the feedstock. On clean, sorted plastic, mechanical recycling wins. On mixed film, multilayer packaging and contaminated waste, pyrolysis recovers value where mechanical recycling recovers nothing — which is the efficiency that matters for the plastic that is actually being landfilled today.
The realistic framing is complementary: a recovery system is most efficient when mechanical recycling takes the clean fraction and pyrolysis takes the rest, closing the gap that currently leaks to landfill.
The Right Metric Is Total Recovery
Efficiency should be measured as recovery across the whole stream, not the yield of any single machine. Judged that way, pyrolysis is the piece that makes a plastic recovery system complete.
