ORC Working Fluids Explained

ORC Working Fluids

The working fluid is the heart of an ORC system. It is the substance that boils, expands and condenses inside the closed loop, and its properties decide what temperature of heat the system can use and how efficiently it converts that heat to power. Choosing the fluid is therefore the first and most important design decision in an ORC project.

How Fluids Differ

ORC fluids are organic compounds or refrigerants chosen for a boiling point far below water’s. A fluid is selected to match the heat-source temperature, vaporising completely within the available temperature difference without overheating or under-using the heat. Common choices include refrigerants and light hydrocarbons, each suited to a different temperature band.

Why the Match Is Everything

Use a fluid that boils too hot and low-grade heat simply cannot vaporise it; use one that boils too low and the cycle wastes the heat’s potential. Beyond boiling point, factors such as thermal stability, safety and environmental impact narrow the choice. Matching the fluid to the heat source is what turns an ORC from a concept into a machine that reliably produces power.
