ORC Retrofit for Existing Boilers

ORC Boiler Retrofit

An existing boiler or process plant already produces plenty of waste heat; it simply lets it escape. Retrofitting an ORC captures that heat and adds power recovery to a plant that was not built for it, generating electricity without replacing the boiler or disturbing the core process, a lower-cost route to efficiency than a rebuild.

How a Retrofit Works

The ORC module is added to the plant’s existing heat streams, the flue gas, the blowdown, the process condensate, extracting heat that currently goes to the stack or cooling. Because the module is self-contained and downstream, it can be added while the plant keeps running, yielding power without a shutdown or a change to the existing equipment.

Why Retrofits Are Attractive

For an operating plant, the boiler and process are sunk costs, so recovering their waste heat is pure incremental gain. A retrofit ORC unlocks that value at a fraction of the cost of new equipment and without the disruption of a rebuild, which is why it is among the first options considered when a plant seeks to cut energy cost or emissions.
