ORC for Solar Thermal

ORC Solar Thermal

Solar thermal systems concentrate sunlight into heat, and while utility plants run steam turbines on very high temperatures, smaller installations operate at a more modest, renewable heat that suits an ORC. Coupling an ORC to a solar thermal collector turns captured sunlight into electricity at a scale and temperature where steam is uneconomical.

How Solar Heat Becomes Power

Solar collectors heat a working fluid that is fed to an ORC system, which vaporises its own low-boiling fluid and drives a turbine and generator, exactly as it would on any other heat source. The sun replaces the waste heat or geothermal brine, but the downstream cycle is the same proven ORC technology.

Why ORC Fits Smaller Solar

For distributed and moderate-temperature solar thermal systems, a full steam plant is too large and complex, while an ORC scales down cleanly and runs on the thermal range the collectors actually deliver. The same flexibility that lets ORC harvest industrial waste heat also makes it a practical route to modular, renewable power from the sun.
