ORC for Pyrolysis Plant Waste Heat: Power From the Heat of Decomposition
ORC Pyrolysis Waste Heat
Pyrolysis breaks down waste by heating it in an oxygen-free atmosphere, and that process generates a steady stream of heat that has to go somewhere, in the hot product gas, in the char and in the cooling train. An organic Rankine cycle (ORC) system recycles that heat into electricity, making the pyrolysis plant partly power itself.
Where the Heat Comes From
A pyrolysis plant releases heat at several stages: the hot vapour stream that is condensed into pyrolysis oil, the non-condensable gas that is recycled or burned, and the hot char and steel discharged from the reactor. Each stage’s heat is too low for a steam turbine but ideal for an ORC module, which converts it into the electric power the plant’s shredders, dryers and controls consume.
Why It Helps the Bottom Line
Pyrolysis economics depend on recovering maximum value from every tonne of waste, and the heat is part of that value. Coupling an ORC turns otherwise-wasted thermal energy into on-site power, cutting the plant’s grid draw and improving its net energy balance, which translates directly into better project economics and a lower carbon footprint.
