ORC for Marine Waste Heat Recovery
ORC Marine Waste Heat
A ship burns enormous quantities of fuel to drive its engines, and a large share of that energy leaves through the exhaust. An ORC system recovers marine exhaust heat and converts it into electric power on board, cutting the vessel’s fuel consumption and its emissions from heat that would otherwise be dumped overboard.
How Marine Heat Is Recovered
The main engine’s exhaust and cooling circuits carry away low-to-medium temperature heat that an ORC can use. Exhaust gases pass through a heat exchanger that vaporises a working fluid, which drives a turbine and generator, producing electricity for the ship’s systems. The recovered power reduces the load on the auxiliary generators that otherwise provide it.
Why It Matters at Sea
Fuel is the dominant cost of operating a vessel, and the shipping industry faces tightening emissions regulation. Recovering exhaust heat as power attacks both, reducing bunkered fuel and the associated emissions, which is why waste heat recovery is becoming a standard consideration in newbuild and retrofit decisions alike.
