ORC for Gasification & Syngas Heat Recovery

ORC Syngas Heat Recovery

Gasification turns waste or biomass into a combustible syngas, but that gas leaves the reactor very hot and must be cooled before it can be cleaned or burned. That cooling step releases a large amount of heat, and an organic Rankine cycle (ORC) system is an ideal way to recover it, converting the heat removed from the syngas into electricity.

Where the Heat Is

Syngas exiting a gasifier can be several hundred degrees Celsius, and quenching or cooling it to a usable temperature transfers all that energy into a cooling fluid. Rather than rejecting that heat to a cooling tower, an ORC module takes it, boils a working fluid and spins a turbine to generate power, turning a necessary cooling cost into a revenue stream.

Why It Fits Gasification

Gasification plants are energy-intensive and their economics depend on squeezing value from every stage. Adding ORC recovers power from heat that would otherwise be thrown away, improving net efficiency and reducing the plant’s external electricity draw. Because ORC operates on low-to-medium temperature heat, it matches the syngas-cooling temperature range almost perfectly.

Recover Power From Syngas Cooling

Klean Industries integrates ORC power recovery into its turn-key gasification and waste-to-energy systems, capturing the heat the syngas gives up.

Klean Industries has delivered three recovered carbon black plants in India over the past two years, with a further five under letter of intent.
