Alterra, Technip Energies and Neste Launch Nerea, a Standardized Modular Solution for Plastic Chemical Recycling

Plastic Chemical Recycling

Alterra, Technip Energies and Neste have launched Nerea, a standardized, modular industrial offering designed to accelerate the deployment of chemical recycling projects for plastic waste. By shifting from bespoke, one-off engineering to a repeatable product model, the three partners aim to give waste operators, project developers and petrochemical players a faster, more predictable route to circular plastic production.

The offering combines Alterra’s thermochemical liquefaction technology — which has run continuously for more than five years processing real-world plastic waste at the company’s Akron, Ohio facility — with Technip Energies’ engineering, project-delivery and modularization capability, and Neste’s circular-feedstock expertise. The result is a plant that converts heterogeneous, hard-to-recycle plastic waste into high-quality feedstock for the petrochemical industry, with lower pre-investment and reduced cost and schedule risk.

Global plastics production has nearly doubled over the past two decades to roughly 431 million tons in 2024, while circularity rates have lagged consumption, leaving large volumes of plastic bound for incinerators, landfills or the environment. Neste’s newly started upgrading unit at its Porvoo, Finland refinery — the largest of its kind by capacity — is positioned to absorb increasing volumes of liquefied waste plastic as the Nerea model scales.

Deploy Modular Chemical Recycling With a Proven Partner

Nerea’s launch confirms the market is standardizing plastic chemical recycling — turning hard-to-recycle waste into petrochemical feedstock with a repeatable, lower-risk plant model.

Klean Industries’ plastic-pyrolysis technology already converts end-of-life plastics into recovered fuels and feedstocks across Germany, Canada, the USA, Malta, Thailand and Japan — supported by turn-key EPC delivery and feasibility studies that de-risk a project before capital is committed.
