Every tonne of discarded electronics and shredder residue is a small, dense ore body, and modern metal recycling is the discipline of turning that dispersed value back into refined copper, gold, silver, palladium, and other marketable materials.
Two Metals, Two Recovery Logics
Metal recycling splits naturally into two families that demand very different treatment. Base metals such as copper and aluminum exist in relatively large quantities and are recovered through smelting, mechanical separation, and electrolytic refining. Precious metals, gold and palladium among them, are present in tiny amounts but at concentrations high enough to justify careful, targeted extraction.
The economics of the two are complementary. Base metals provide volume and predictable value, while precious metals provide the high-value margin that can make a marginal waste stream profitable to process at all.
Where the Value Actually Sits
In electronic waste, the highest-value metals are not spread evenly through a device. Gold is concentrated on connector surfaces and printed circuit boards. Copper is concentrated in wiring, windings, and power components. Palladium is found in multilayer ceramic capacitors. The skill of metal recycling lies in knowing where each metal sits and keeping those components from being diluted into a low-grade mix.
This is why deconstruction and sorting are inseparable from recovery. A circuit board kept whole is a far more valuable input to a refiner than the same board shredded into mixed residue.
A Working Reference Point
Klean’s experience gives a concrete sense of what disciplined recovery can yield. In a small e-waste plant built in Tokyo, roughly 42 grams of gold and more than 200 grams of other metals, including copper, palladium, platinum, and silver, were recovered per tonne of e-waste. Critically, the plastic fraction of that same waste was converted into fuel that supplied a neighboring facility, demonstrating that metal recycling can operate as one output of an integrated resource-recovery plant rather than an isolated process.
Integration Is the Modern Standard
The operators winning in metal recycling today are those that treat it as part of a wider system. When plastics are routed to pyrolysis, metals to non-ferrous refining, and residues to energy recovery, each stream reinforces the others. That integration is what turns a complex waste problem into a portfolio of saleable outputs, from e-waste through automotive shredder residue.
