Is Tire Pyrolysis a Good Investment? What to Evaluate Before You Commit
Tire Pyrolysis Investment
Tire pyrolysis is an established, commercially proven route for turning end-of-life tires into three saleable outputs: pyrolysis oil, recovered carbon black, and steel. Whether a specific plant is a good investment, however, comes down to the fundamentals of the project — not the appeal of the technology.
Investors who win treat a pyrolysis plant as a full industrial project, not a piece of equipment. The technology is the easy part; the returns are made in feedstock supply, product offtake, permitting and capital efficiency.
The Factors That Decide the Return
The first determinant is feedstock. A plant is only as profitable as its steady, contracted supply of end-of-life tires at a predictable tipping fee or cost. The second is offtake: whether the pyrolysis oil, recovered carbon black and steel can be sold into established markets at known prices — ideally under forward agreements rather than spot sales.
The third is engineering and capital. Continuous plants with higher throughput and better heat recovery lower the cost per tonne processed, while oversized, under-specified equipment erodes margin. Feasibility work up front — before any equipment is bought — is what separates projects that clear their hurdle rate from those that do not.
Why Some Projects Succeed and Others Stall
The most common failures are predictable: permitting delays, feedstock shortfalls, offtake that never materialises, and machines purchased before the project economics were proven. Every one of those is a planning problem, not a technology problem. That is why serious investors spend on feasibility studies, due diligence and turn-key delivery before committing capital.
