High-Temperature ORC: Reaching Into the Top of the Waste Heat Band
High Temperature ORC
While ORC is best known for capturing low-grade heat, the cycle also scales upward. High-temperature ORC systems use working fluids that boil at a higher point, letting them recover hotter waste heat streams and convert them to power at higher efficiency and output than a low-temperature cycle can achieve.
What Changes at High Temperature
The working fluid is the difference. Where a low-temperature ORC uses fluids that vaporise below 100 °C, a high-temperature variant selects fluids that boil well above that, matching hotter exhaust and flue gas. The higher heat source allows a larger temperature difference across the turbine, which lifts both the efficiency and the power per unit of heat.
Where High-Temperature ORC Fits
High-temperature ORC suits the hotter end of waste heat, from high-temperature industrial exhaust to the flue gas of kilns and furnaces, where the heat is too cool for steam economics but too hot to waste. It bridges the gap between low-temperature recovery and full steam cycles, extracting value from a heat band that would otherwise need custom, larger equipment.

Match the Cycle to the Heat’s Temperature
Klean Industries selects ORC fluids and cycles across the temperature range so recovered output is maximised for each heat source.
