A printed circuit board is a far richer source of gold than most mined ore, and gold recovery from e-waste is the process of concentrating and extracting that precious metal from discarded electronics at a commercial scale.

Why Gold Is in Electronics

Gold’s combination of excellent conductivity and resistance to corrosion makes it the material of choice for connectors, edge contacts, and bonding surfaces across a vast range of electronics. Because the metal is applied in extremely thin layers, the amount in any single device is small, but the concentration in a circuit board is many times higher than in typical ore.

That concentration is what makes e-waste a genuine gold-bearing feedstock rather than a curiosity. The question has never been whether the gold is there; it is whether recovery can be done cleanly and economically.

Concentration Before Extraction

Effective gold recovery from e-waste is a staged process. It begins with deconstruction, keeping circuit boards and connector-bearing components intact rather than shredding them into a diluted mix. It continues with mechanical concentration and, ultimately, refining steps that liberate the gold from the surrounding copper, solder, and laminate.

Each stage depends on the one before it. A plant that masters sorting and concentration can hand a refiner a high-grade input, while a plant that skips those steps hands over a low-grade mixture that costs more to process.

A Measured Reference Point

Klean’s experience offers a concrete benchmark. In a small e-waste plant built in Tokyo, roughly 42 grams of gold were recovered per tonne of e-waste, alongside more than 200 grams of other metals including copper, palladium, platinum, and silver. That same facility converted the plastic fraction of the e-waste into fuel supplying a neighboring operation, illustrating that gold recovery is strongest when it runs inside an integrated plant.

The volume of electronics reaching end-of-life continues to rise, which means the gold embedded in that equipment keeps rising too.
