Gasification vs Pyrolysis for Shredder Residue: Choosing the Process

Gasification Vs Pyrolysis

Gasification and pyrolysis are both thermal routes for shredder residue, but they are not interchangeable. The difference comes down to temperature, oxygen and what you want back from the process — and that difference decides which one fits a given project.

Pyrolysis heats the material in the near-absence of oxygen at moderate temperature, producing oil, gas and char. Gasification adds a controlled amount of oxidant at higher temperature, driving the conversion further toward a synthesis gas and leaving an inorganic ash that can be melted into a glassy slag.

What Each Route Recovers

The practical split is in the outputs. A pyrolysis-first approach keeps more of the carbon in the char and oil, which then need further upgrading. A gasification-and-melting approach converts the organic fraction to syngas for power and melts the mineral fraction into a stable, inert slag, with metals recovered along the way.

For a heterogeneous feed like automotive shredder residue — energetic polymers mixed with glass, minerals and trapped metals — the integrated gasification route separates the material cleanly in one platform, which is why Klean’s reference plant combines fluidized-bed gasification with ash melting.

The Decision Is an Output Decision

There is no universally better process, only the process that matches the operator’s product strategy. Once the desired outputs are defined — power, metals, aggregate — the right thermal route follows directly.
