Ferrous Metal Recovery From Shredder Residue: Closing the Steel Loop

Ferrous Metal Recovery

Ferrous metal is the easiest fraction of shredder residue to recover and the largest by mass, but even after the shredder’s magnets do their work, residual iron and steel remains bound into the residue. Recovering it completes the steel loop that a vehicle started.

Iron and steel respond to magnetic separation, which makes their recovery straightforward in a properly designed process line. The challenge is not the technique but the integration — extracting the ferrous fraction at the point where it is cleanest, before it is entrained into other unit operations.

Returning Steel to the Scrap Industry

At Klean’s automotive-shredder-residue facility, magnetic metals are separated at the plant and delivered back to the shredder plant for recycling into the scrap industry. The recovered ferrous metal rejoins the same steel supply chain the original vehicle once drew from.

That return is the point of circularity in miniature: the shredder produced the residue, the residue holds residual steel, and the processing plant hands that steel back to the shredder’s own downstream — a closed loop within the wider vehicle recycling system.

Volume Makes Ferrous Matter

Ferrous recovery may be low-value per tonne, but the tonnage is large. Over the life of a residue-processing operation, returning even a steady fraction of iron and steel to the scrap market compounds into a meaningful material recovery that would otherwise be landfilled.
