Diesel Dewaxing Process vs. Crude Oil Dewaxing
Diesel Dewaxing Process
The word dewaxing covers two distinct refinery duties that are often confused. The diesel dewaxing process tunes the cold-flow behaviour of middle distillate fuels, while crude oil dewaxing shapes the low-temperature performance of lubricant base stocks. Understanding the difference is key to meeting both fuel and lubricant specifications.
Crude Oil Dewaxing
Crude oil dewaxing typically refers to dewaxing heavy fractions such as vacuum gas oil or deasphalted oil destined for lubricants. The goal is a base stock with a low pour point and a high viscosity index, the properties that define Group I, II, and III base oils.
The Diesel Dewaxing Process
In contrast, the diesel dewaxing process targets the diesel fraction itself. Long-chain paraffins in the middle distillate range crystallize in cold weather and can clog fuel filters and lines, stalling engines. Dewaxing ensures the fuel meets cold-flow specifications, namely cloud point, pour point, and cold filter plugging point, which is essential for winter-grade diesel.
Key Differences
The two routes differ in feedstock, refinery location, and objective. Base oil dewaxing sits downstream of vacuum distillation and aims for lubricant quality, while diesel dewaxing runs within the distillate hydrotreating complex to maximize cold-weather fuel yield, converting paraffins to branched isomers with minimal cracking.
Working Together
Both processes improve low-temperature fluidity, yet their paths and purposes remain separate. Integrating them lets a refinery deliver lubricant base oils and transport fuels that perform across climates.
