Crude Oil Fractional Distillation

In its raw state crude oil is a mixture of hydrocarbons too varied to use directly. Crude oil fractional distillation is the process that makes it usable, splitting the oil by boiling-point range into the fuels, lubricants, and feedstocks that modern industry runs on, without altering the molecules themselves.

A Thermal, Not Chemical, Separation

Fractional distillation works on a physical principle rather than a chemical reaction. Crude is heated until its components vaporise, and as the vapour rises through a column, the temperature falls from bottom to top. Each hydrocarbon condenses at its own level and is drawn off, leaving the molecular structure of every fraction unchanged.

Following the Oil Through the Tower

Heating raises the crude to several hundred degrees before it enters the flash zone, where lighter material vaporises first. Column trays and draw-off points capture successive cuts, while an overhead condenser recovers the lightest vapours such as LPG and naphtha. Heavy material that will not vaporise is pulled off lower down or passed to a vacuum stage.

Why Every Fraction Has a Buyer

The lighter gases remain gases, gasoline and kerosene serve vehicles and aircraft, and diesel fuels trucks and ships. Heavier lubricating-oil cuts are refined into engine oils and greases, while fuel oil powers marine and boiler applications and the residual bitumen paves roads. The process is the single source of this entire product family.
