Conductive Additives: Five Trends Reshaping Battery Electrode Design

Battery Conductive Additives

Orion S.A. has set out five trends reshaping the role of conductive additives in lithium-ion batteries and other energy storage technologies, published ahead of The Battery Show Detroit 2026 held from 12 to 15 October.

The common thread is that conductive carbon is no longer treated as a commodity conductivity booster. It is being specified as an engineered component of electrode design, judged on structure, purity and processing behaviour as much as on resistivity.

Additives Shape the Electrode, Not Just Conductivity

Orion notes that the primary job of a conductive additive is to build a continuous three-dimensional network that moves electrons between active-material particles and the current collector. That backbone supports consistent electron transport through cycling.

But the same particles also shape electrode microstructure, influencing pore channels, electrolyte distribution and ionic transport. Optimising those factors alongside electrical conductivity is where additional gains in active-material utilisation, rate capability and cycle life are found.

Performance Requirements Are Tightening

Faster-charging electric vehicles, higher-energy-density cells and longer-lived stationary storage systems all raise the bar. Cell makers increasingly want materials that combine electrical conductivity with low impurity levels, consistent quality and sustainable production.

Orion argues that no single carbon grade covers the field. A portfolio spanning furnace, lamp and acetylene process carbon blacks is needed to match the diverse requirements of different battery chemistries and formats.

Hybrid Conductive Systems Are Spreading

Blending carbon black with carbon nanotubes is becoming more common because the two deliver complementary benefits in conductivity and mechanical resilience. As new cell formats and active materials appear, engineering a conductive network for a specific chemistry becomes a design discipline in its own right.

Orion has invested in a fully equipped battery laboratory so customers can tune those combinations against defined chemistries and performance targets.

Automotive Quality Reaches Deeper into the Supply Chain

Chemical producers historically worked to their own sector standards. Conductive carbons are now subject to stricter cleanliness requirements, more rigorous traceability and analytical methods capable of detecting trace metallic contaminants.

In response, Orion completed qualification to IATF 16949, the automotive industry quality standard, at its conductive additives plant in Berre-l’Étang, France.

Dispersion Can Matter as Much as Material Choice

Slurry preparation is a critical step in electrode manufacturing, where material properties, interactions between formulation components and mixing conditions all have to be considered together. Carbon black plays a major role in slurry rheology, so grade selection is inseparable from formulation and process design.

Through its battery applications laboratory, Orion works with customers on formulations for lithium-ion, lead-acid and emerging battery technologies, combining additive design, selection and dispersion expertise.

What It Means for Recovered Carbon

Taken together, the trends point to a market that pays for engineered, traceable, clean carbon rather than tonnes of black powder. That is a demanding specification, and it is the same bar recovered carbon black producers must clear to reach high-value applications.

For anyone building a carbon recovery business, the signal is clear: process control, consistency and documented quality determine which markets you can sell into.

Build Carbon Quality into the Plant, Not the Sales Pitch

Consistency of carbon quality is decided by reactor design, process control and post-processing, not by marketing. Klean Industries delivers recovered carbon black and tyre pyrolysis facilities as KBR turnkey projects that are performance-guaranteed, 100% bankable and carry zero delivery risk for the owner.

The guarantees rest on commercial-scale operating references, including a commercial recovered carbon black plant in Poland producing to specification rather than to a brochure. That is the proof lenders and offtakers ask for when a producer claims it can meet demanding industrial quality requirements.

You can license the technology and operate it under your own brand, or have Klean and KBR engineer, build and guarantee the facility turnkey. Both routes begin with a feasibility study that models your feedstock, target carbon grades and offtake economics.
