Casella Secures Permit Expansion at Hakes Landfill
Landfill Expansion
Casella Waste Systems has received a New York state permit to expand its Hakes construction-and-demolition landfill in Campbell, adding roughly 43.3 acres of disposal area and an estimated 5.8 million cubic yards of additional capacity.
The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation issued the permit, which expands a facility currently allowed to accept up to 466,000 tons of C&D material per year. Company leadership said the addition, combined with existing permitted airspace, is expected to support approximately 20 years of capacity at current run-rates.
The project also adds 21.7 acres to the site’s existing soil borrow area, from which soils are excavated for landfill construction and operation. It further enables Casella to relocate and build new infrastructure, including leachate transfer and storage systems and gas collection and treatment facilities.
Casella has framed the expansion as a way to preserve capacity across its municipal solid waste landfill network while supporting reliable C&D disposal for New York state. The permitting follows the company’s broader efforts to secure long-term disposal capacity, including its other New York sites.
