Carbon Black Producer Highlights Sustainability and EU Concerns

Carbon Black Circular Economy

Specialty chemicals producer Orion S.A. is casting sustainability as a growth driver, highlighting the carbon black circular economy alongside electrification and energy storage in its 2025 Sustainability Report, released in June.

Electrification and Circular Materials

Released under the theme “Driving innovation – essential for the future,” the report shows how Orion’s materials are advancing electrification, energy storage and the circular economy. Key growth opportunities include supplying differentiated conductive materials for battery energy storage systems, high-voltage wire and cable, and lithium-ion batteries for electric vehicles. The battery storage opportunity is driven by rising renewable energy use and the expansion of energy-intensive data centers, while the lithium-ion market continues to grow despite short-term volatility. Chief executive Corning Painter framed the position plainly, describing sustainability as a strategic business opportunity rather than a cost to manage.

Operational Gains

The report highlights concrete progress on the ground: upgraded technology in Sweden now recovers heat from the production process and supplies it to a city, while operational improvements in South Africa cut waste by 30%. Across its plants worldwide, Orion says its safety record came in nine times better than the chemical industry’s average.

Recognition and Bio-Circular Products

Those efforts earned a Platinum rating from EcoVadis, ten safety awards from the International Carbon Black Association, a listing on the European Commission’s Innovation Radar and a “Green Factory” designation in China. The report also points to bio-circular grades such as ECORAX Nature 200, which can cut product carbon footprint by up to 100% compared with conventional fossil-derived grades, underscoring the environmental case for circular and bio-circular solutions.

Regulatory Concerns in Europe

Alongside the wins, Orion flags concerns around European regulation and what it terms the sector’s “overlooked realities,” signalling the pressures it expects to shape the carbon black industry as circular-economy, climate and energy policy tighten. Painter ties the strategy to the energy transition, noting the company’s ultra-pure conductive additives help power everything from electric vehicles to grid-scale storage. Orion has also backed tire recycling ventures to secure tire pyrolysis oil feedstock, linking its circular-economy ambitions directly to end-of-life tires.
