California Leads 13-State Lawsuit Over Hydrogen Hub Funding

Hydrogen Hub Funding

California is leading a multi-state lawsuit over withdrawn federal hydrogen hub funding, part of a broader effort to restore billions in clean energy awards terminated by the US Department of Energy.

What Hydrogen Hubs Do

Hydrogen hubs are regional networks that link the production, storage, movement, and use of low-carbon hydrogen across industry and energy. The US Department of Energy has pursued a programme of regional clean hydrogen hubs intended to build out that infrastructure nationwide, bringing together utilities, manufacturers, and public agencies around shared supply chains.

The Lawsuit and Its Scope

On 18 February, California Attorney General Rob Bonta co-led a group of 13 attorneys general in filing the suit in the US District Court for the Northern District of California.

Who Is Named

The filing challenges decisions by the Department of Energy, Energy Secretary Chris Wright, the Office of Management and Budget (OMB), and OMB Director Russell Vought to terminate billions in energy and infrastructure awards nationwide.

Hydrogen Hub Funding at Stake

The dispute centres on roughly $1.2bn promised toward California’s clean hydrogen hub plans, funding the state says was axed alongside other clean energy commitments.

Hydrogen Fuel-Cell Tire Logistics

The fight over hub funding decides where public money lands, but the underlying technology is already hauling real freight. Klean’s NMC project puts hydrogen fuel-cell Class 8 trucks to work in scrap-tire logistics, developed with Nikola, Plug Power, and Enapter to prove low-carbon heavy haul on a commercial route.
