Waga Energy Lifts Biomethane Output 31 Percent

Waga Energy Biomethane

France-based Waga Energy reported a 31 percent year-on-year rise in biomethane production for the first half of 2026, as its landfill gas upgrading fleet keeps growing.

First-Half Output

The company produced 426 gigawatt hours, equivalent to 1.5 million MMBtu, of renewable natural gas during the first six months of 2026, up 31 percent from the same period a year earlier. That higher output prevented around 173,000 tonnes of equivalent CO2 emissions over the half, underlining the abatement value that comes with every additional converted volume.

A Growing Fleet

Waga Energy operates 38 production units, with a further 21 units under construction, giving a portfolio of 59 projects representing roughly 4.4 terawatt hours of annual capacity. Each unit takes biogas captured at a landfill site and upgrades it to grid-quality biomethane, turning methane that would otherwise be vented or flared into a saleable renewable fuel for heating and transport.

Landfill Gas Conversion at Work

The conversion process captures methane that would otherwise escape to atmosphere and refines it to the point where it displaces fossil natural gas. Higher converted volumes translate into more methane abated and a larger renewable gas supply at a time when energy buyers across Europe are working to cut the carbon intensity of their gas through certified renewable sourcing.

Commercial Momentum And Expansion

Production growth sat alongside a 22 percent rise in consolidated revenue to €33.5 million for the first half, with a second consecutive half of positive EBITDA. The group keeps adding capacity abroad as well, including a recently announced agreement to build and operate a landfill-gas-to-biomethane unit in the Granada area of Spain, and has flagged that its medium-term revenue and installed-capacity ambitions will now arrive later than first planned as the fleet works toward its target scale.

Biomethane From Solid Waste

Waga Energy upgrades landfill gas; Klean delivers biomethane production from the solid-waste side. Its Bioenergie Schuby biomethane plant in Germany, developed with Niersberger, converts organic waste into grid-ready biomethane, alongside gasification and energy-from-waste systems.
