Biomass Boiler vs Gas Boiler: Renewable Fuel or a Cheaper Install
Biomass Vs Gas Boiler
Gas boilers are the default industrial heating choice because they are cheap to install and easy to run, but they burn a fossil fuel with a volatile price and a real carbon footprint. A biomass boiler costs more up front and needs fuel handling, yet it burns a renewable, locally sourced fuel, which is why the comparison is increasingly decided on decarbonisation goals rather than capital cost alone.
Running Cost and Fuel
Gas is convenient, piped to the plant and burned with minimal handling. Biomass requires storage, drying and feeding equipment, and the fuel is bulkier per unit of energy. But for a site with its own wood or agricultural residue, or cheap access to forestry waste, the biomass fuel is effectively a by-product, which can make the running cost far lower than gas, especially when gas prices spike.
Emissions and Carbon
Biomass combustion is treated as near carbon-neutral because the fuel absorbed carbon as it grew, whereas gas releases ancient carbon into the atmosphere. For an operation under pressure to decarbonise its process heat, that difference often outweighs the higher boiler cost, making biomass the strategic choice even where gas is presently cheaper.
