Shipping Line Secures Major Contract for Ammonia-Ready Iron Ore Fleet

Ammonia-Ready Newcastlemax

South Korean carrier HMM has signed a KRW 4.7 trillion (US$3.5 billion) long-term shipping contract with Brazilian miner Vale to haul iron ore aboard ammonia-ready Newcastlemax bulk carriers, locking in a quarter-century of dedicated tonnage.

Eight Vessels, Twenty-Five Years Each

The agreement covers eight 210,000-dwt Newcastlemax bulk carriers, each operating under its own 25-year contract beginning in 2030, when the newbuildings are delivered. HMM ordered the eight vessels in June to service the deal, which was signed on 7 September and disclosed on 8 September, with an overall service period running from April 2030 to October 2056.

Ammonia And LNG-Ready Design

Described as the world’s first tri-fuel bulk carriers, the vessels will carry engines capable of running on methanol, ethanol and conventional fuel. They are also being built LNG-ready and ammonia-ready, keeping open the option to convert to lower-carbon fuels as bunkering infrastructure matures, and will be fitted with rotor sails for wind-assisted propulsion.

A Third Vale Deal For HMM

The contract is HMM’s third major long-term deal with Vale, following two 10-year agreements signed in May and September 2025. The filing values the agreement at around 43% of HMM’s 2025 consolidated revenue, and Vale holds an option to extend employment by up to five years, with Brazil and China among the trading areas covered.

Reducing Fuel Burn And Emissions

The rotor sails use spinning cylinders and the Magnus effect to supplement engine power and cut fuel consumption, part of Vale’s wider effort to reduce carbon emissions across its export chain. HMM framed the agreement as reaffirming a strong strategic partnership with a premier global charterer.

Contract Mechanics

Under the filing, payments are due within ten business days after loading on each voyage, and the final contract value may adjust with exchange rates, fuel prices, trading routes, vessel operating days and any change in propulsion fuel. Vale International SA is named as HMM’s contractual counterparty.

A Wider Multi-Fuel Fleet

The HMM order forms one slice of a broader Vale program selecting three Asian shipowners to build and operate 20 tri-fuel Newcastlemax carriers, with HMM taking eight, Polaris Shipping six and Shandong Shipping six. Vale describes the approach as a multi-fuel strategy for its iron ore export chain.

Hydrogen Logistics, Minus The Pipeline

Ammonia’s appeal is that it carries hydrogen energy in a shippable form — and Klean Industries already works at the frontier of hydrogen logistics in heavy transport. Klean built the NMC project, a hydrogen fuel-cell Class-8 scrap-tire logistics operation with Nikola, Plug Power and Enapter, alongside hydrogen-from-waste and gasification pathways that produce hydrogen where it is needed.
