Introduction:
Most tire pyrolysis operators can make the oil. Far fewer can do anything valuable with it, because the buyers who matter, carbon black manufacturers, will not accept a new feedstock without proof that it works in their furnaces. Klean Industries spent years closing exactly that gap and turned recovered tire pyrolysis oil into a qualified blend stock for carbon black production.
The Challenge:
Carbon black is the reinforcing agent in nearly every tire and rubber product on earth, and it is made almost entirely from virgin fossil feedstocks. Producers who want to decarbonise face a wall. A replacement feedstock has to match the exact specification, consistency and furnace performance of conventional carbon black oil, and nothing gets accepted on a promise. That is why tire derived oil, which ought to be the obvious circular answer, has sat on the outside of the market.
The Solution:
Klean did the unglamorous work that makes acceptance possible. It characterized the oil, blended it to a stable specification and proved it performs in a real carbon black furnace without disturbing product quality, uptime or compliance. Because a tire’s natural rubber content carries through the process, the feedstock arrives with a meaningful and verifiable biobased fraction, typically 35 to 40 percent. And the qualification was validated across multiple markets and supply sources, not in a single laboratory run.
The Outcome:
The result is a drop in circular feedstock that carbon black manufacturers can actually use, which closes the loop between end of life tires and the tires of tomorrow. It proves something more valuable still: recovered tire pyrolysis oil can clear the specification barrier. That barrier, not the oil, is the real constraint, and clearing it is what separates a stranded waste stream from a marketable product.
The opportunity for TPO producers:
For a recycler or pyrolysis operator sitting on tire pyrolysis oil, the hard part has never been producing it. It is getting a carbon black manufacturer to take it, and that depends on characterization, blending, specification, furnace validation and offtake terms that most operators never see. Klean has already walked that entire path. Bring us your oil and we can qualify it, structure the supply and open the door with the carbon black makers who do not currently return your call.
The opportunity for recovered carbon black players:
The market runs in both directions. A recovered carbon black producer who wants to run on circular feedstock instead of virgin carbon black oil needs a secure, specification grade supply of tire pyrolysis oil, and feedstock security is the constraint that decides whether a project gets financed. Klean sources TPO through its own project network and its longer term supply partnerships, which puts consistent, qualified feedstock within reach for producers who would otherwise struggle to lock in the volumes a commercial plant needs. If you operate or are developing an rCB facility, Klean can secure the TPO that keeps it fed.
Whichever side you sit on, this is the work the feasibility programme exists to deliver, and it sits alongside Klean’s recovered carbon black project portfolio, our carbon intensity management practice and the detailed equipment quotation process.
