UK Environment Agency Publishes Latest Waste Tyre Export Compliance Figures
Waste Tyre Compliance
The UK Environment Agency has published its latest compliance figures for waste tyre exporters, tracking performance under enhanced export checks introduced for shipments leaving England.
The enhanced checks, in force since October 2025, are designed to confirm where waste tyres are sent, whether shipments reach their intended destination, and whether the material is managed in a way that protects the environment. The agency’s August 2026 progress update shows measurable improvement, alongside a clear signal that further tightening remains under active review.
The Latest Figures
As of 3 August 2026, exporters had supplied shipment details for 10,822 movements of waste tyres. Of these, 5,819 had reached the 16-week deadline by which evidence of arrival is required. Some 3,837 shipments, or 62.12%, were recorded as fully or partially compliant, while 1,091 shipments, or 17.66%, were logged as non-compliant.
The regime reflects a concentrated export trade. The checks were introduced amid concerns that tyres listed on shipping documents were being diverted away from legitimate recovery facilities and toward illegal pyrolysis sites overseas.
What Exporters Must Demonstrate
Compliance now hinges on traceability. Exporters must provide Annex VII shipment information for each calendar month by the 21st day of the following month, and must notify the agency of any new destination treatment facility in India before it is used. Where containers are unpacked, alternative evidence of the tyre’s arrival and handling is required.
Enforcement And What Comes Next
The Environment Agency has said it will issue formal warning letters and prohibition notices where obligations are not met, and may escalate to further regulatory action if performance does not improve. For legitimate operators on both sides of the supply chain, the message is straightforward: verified, environmentally sound recovery is becoming the baseline expectation for cross-border tyre recycling.
