Rotary Kiln vs Fluidized Bed: Choosing a Thermal Reactor
Kiln Vs Fluidized Bed
The rotary kiln and the fluidized bed are two of the most common thermal reactors for waste and biomass, but they move material and heat in fundamentally different ways. The kiln tumbles material through a heated drum; the fluidized bed suspends it in a churning bed of hot solids. Each suits a different set of feedstocks and products.
The Rotary Kiln’s Strengths
The kiln excels with bulky, heterogeneous and variable feedstock, handling large pieces, moisture and contamination that would trouble other reactors, and it sustains a controlled or inert atmosphere essential for pyrolysis. Its throughput is steady and its technology is proven at enormous scale, which is why it dominates pyrolysis and calcination.
The Fluidized Bed’s Strengths
The fluidized bed offers rapid, uniform heat transfer and complete mixing, suiting combustion and gasification of finer, more uniform fuels, where its lower combustion temperature cuts emissions. It is the choice for high-throughput combustion of consistent fuels, though it is less tolerant of large, sticky or highly variable feed.
