Rotary Kiln for Lithium-Ion Battery Recycling
Rotary Kiln Battery Recycling
The wave of lithium-ion batteries powering electric vehicles and electronics will become a wave of spent batteries, and recovering their lithium, cobalt, nickel and manganese is fast becoming a critical industry. The rotary kiln is increasingly the tool of choice for the thermal stage of that recovery, treating the battery material ahead of metal extraction.
The Thermal Stage of Battery Recycling
Before battery metals can be recovered, spent cells are typically discharged, shredded and processed thermally. A rotary kiln heats the shredded material under controlled conditions to remove flammable electrolytes, plastics and binders, leaving a concentrated metal-bearing powder known as black mass. That black mass is then the feedstock for downstream hydrometallurgical or pyrometallurgical metal recovery.
Why the Rotary Kiln
Battery material is hazardous, variable and must be handled in a controlled atmosphere to avoid releasing volatiles or igniting residual electrolyte. The rotary kiln’s sealed drum, precise temperature control and continuous tumbling match those demands, processing material safely at the throughput the coming battery volumes will require.
