Rotary Kiln for Chemical Recycling of Plastics
Plastic Chemical Recycling
Mechanical recycling can only handle clean, sorted plastics, which leaves the mixed, contaminated majority out of the loop. Chemical recycling takes that remainder and breaks the polymers back down into their chemical building blocks, and the rotary kiln is a proven way to do it: heating plastic in the absence of oxygen until it cracks into oil and gas.
How Chemical Recycling Works in a Kiln
Mixed plastic is fed into an indirectly heated rotary kiln and raised to pyrolysis temperature without oxygen. The long polymer chains decompose into shorter hydrocarbons, releasing a vapour that condenses into pyrolysis oil, a reusable feedstock, and a gas stream that can help fuel the process. The result is a route for the plastic fraction mechanical recycling cannot touch.
Why the Rotary Kiln
The kiln’s tumbling motion handles plastic’s variable composition and melting behaviour, and its controlled, oxygen-free atmosphere is what allows the cracking reaction to proceed instead of combustion. That makes it suited to the dirty, mixed, real-world plastic waste that is otherwise destined for landfill or incineration.
