Rotary Kiln for ASR (Automotive Shredder Residue)
ASR Rotary Kiln
When a car is shredded and the metals recovered, what remains is automotive shredder residue, a lightweight mix of plastics, rubber, foam, fabric and glass known as ASR. Millions of tonnes of it are produced every year and most heads to landfill, yet it is largely combustible. A rotary kiln offers a way to recover that energy instead of burying it.
What ASR Is
ASR is the non-metallic fraction left after shredding and separating end-of-life vehicles. It is heterogeneous, sometimes contaminated, and increasingly rich in plastics as cars use more polymers. Its composition works against mechanical recycling, which is exactly why thermal recovery is the practical route to its value.
How the Rotary Kiln Recovers It
A rotary kiln can thermally process ASR either by combusting it for energy or by pyrolysing it to recover oil and gas, its rotation handling the mix of materials a static furnace would struggle with. The process shrinks the waste to ash or char, diverts it from landfill, and turns a disposal cost into a source of energy and material value.
