Rotary Kiln Energy Efficiency
Rotary Kiln Efficiency
A rotary kiln is an energy-intensive machine, and its running cost is dominated by fuel. Improving its efficiency is therefore the most direct lever on a plant’s economics, whether through recovering lost heat, tightening the seals, or simply running at the right temperature in the right places.
Where the Energy Goes
Only part of a kiln’s fuel energy actually reaches the material; the rest is lost to the shell, carried away in the exhaust gas and flue, and lost through leakage at the seals. Each of those losses is a target. Recovering exhaust heat, insulating the shell, and sealing the drum so it neither draws cold air nor leaks heat all return fuel energy to the process.
How Efficiency Is Improved
- Heat recovery, using exhaust and product heat to preheat feed or generate power.
- Refractory and insulation, keeping heat where the material is instead of radiating off the shell.
- Combustion and air control, burning fuel completely with just the right excess air.
- Seal maintenance, stopping air in-leakage that dilutes the process and wastes fuel.
