ORC for Data Center Waste Heat

ORC Data Center Heat

Data centers run hot by design, converting enormous amounts of electricity into heat that is then spent more energy removing. An ORC system turns that equation partially on its head, recovering the heat rejected by servers and cooling systems and converting a share of it back into electricity, reducing both the cooling load and the net power draw.

Where the Heat Is

The heat leaves a data center in its cooling loops and hot exhaust air, a steady, continuous stream of low-to-medium temperature energy. That temperature is too low for steam but ideal for an ORC, which captures it, vaporises a working fluid and drives a turbine to generate power on site.

Why It Fits the Data Center Model

Data centers demand reliability, and their heat output is remarkably constant around the clock, giving an ORC a stable duty match. Recovering even part of that heat as power offsets purchased electricity for the facility and can reduce the load on cooling, addressing two of a data center’s largest operating costs at once.
