The non-ferrous metals in shredder residue — copper, aluminium and stainless steel — are its highest-value mineral fraction, and recovering them cleanly is what separates a profitable residue operation from one that merely disposes.

These metals resist magnetic separation, which is why a fraction of them rides through the primary shredder recovery and into the residue. Getting them back requires a processing route that can pre-separate the non-ferrous fraction before the residue is converted.

Pre-Separation, Then Processing

Klean’s reference plant pre-separates the non-ferrous metals and the gasifier’s bottom-ash fraction on site, then routes them to a specialised non-ferrous separation plant. The result is copper, aluminium and stainless steel of good quality, sold to their respective metal markets rather than downcycled or lost.

The logic is to use equipment already optimised for metals separation rather than forcing a residential process to do it. That preserves the metal’s value — quality material commanding full commodity prices.

The Economics of the Secondary Metals

Non-ferrous recovery matters because the metals carry outsized value relative to their small mass. A residue stream that yields clean copper and aluminium pays for part of its own processing through that recovery alone, before the energy and aggregate outputs are even counted.
