Mobile Pyrolysis Could Bring Tyre Recycling Directly to the Tyres
Mobile Tire Recycling
Instead of hauling scrap tires to a plant, Ohio clean-tech firm Gilead Dynamics wants to bring the plant to the tires, with a mobile pyrolysis system called the Carbon Black Extractor.
The Carbon Black Extractor
The Carbon Black Extractor, or CBX, is designed to convert end-of-life tire shreds into three high-value byproducts: recycled carbon black, oil and syngas. The modular, mobile system is built to deploy on two standard 53-foot flatbed trailers, letting operators process tires directly at the stockpile rather than transport them to a fixed facility. Gilead Dynamics, based in Mount Gilead, Ohio, describes it as its flagship platform and its first path to commercialisation.
Microwave Pyrolysis
The CBX pairs advanced pyrolysis with microwave technology, targeting up to 93% carbon black purity, a level comparable to virgin material and critical for reuse in industrial and manufacturing applications. By recovering value from tires that would otherwise be landfilled or incinerated, the system is positioned to support both emissions reduction and supply chain resilience.
A Manufacturing Partnership
The effort marks Gilead Dynamics’ first public milestone, through a strategic manufacturing and enablement agreement with ATS Industrial Automation, a leader in advanced automation systems. ATS is refining the CBX for manufacturability and industrial scale, providing design optimization, fabrication, delivery and full life-cycle service, alongside digital tools, remote diagnostics and a VR-based training platform for operators.
Where It Fits
Bringing pyrolysis capacity to dispersed tyre stockpiles could shorten haulage distances and give smaller or remote sites a route into recovery. The concept holds particular appeal wherever centralised plants sit far from the tyres themselves, extending the reach of end-of-life tire recycling beyond large fixed facilities and toward processing at the point where waste tyres already accumulate.
