High Ash Waste Oil: Can It Still Be Re-refined?

High Ash Waste Oil

High ash waste oil can, in most cases, still be re-refined. The metals, inorganic matter and sludge that give the feed its high ash reading do not belong in the base oil, and the process is designed exactly to split those out and hold them in the residue rather than the recovered fraction. The real question is whether the recoverable oil and the product value justify the extra processing cost.

What Ash Means in the Feed

Ash is the inorganic residue left after a sample is burned. In used oil it comes from wear metals, dispersants, dust, dirt and sludge, all non-volatile in character. These substances behave differently from the hydrocarbon the process aims to lift, so the objective is not to erase ash but to separate the valuable oil from the inert material that carries it.

Pre-Separate Before the Main Column

Heavy-ash feed should not drop straight into the distillation unit. Solid particles and sludge foul heat surfaces, cut transfer efficiency and worsen coking and residue handling. Removing the free solids and sludge early, by settling, filtration or a short solvent treatment where metals and the polar contaminants run high, reduces the load every later stage carries and protects the equipment.

Vacuum Distillation and the Residue

Under reduced pressure the lubricant fraction lifts at a lower temperature while the heavy, non-volatile, ash-forming species stay concentrated in the bottoms. This is what keeps the recovered oil so much leaner in metal than the raw. The residue then itself has to be drawn off, collected and disposed of sensibly, a task that grows with the feed’s ash load.

When the Heavy Feed Is Worth It

Ash alone cannot settle acceptance. What matters is the recoverable oil content, the water and solids, and whether laboratory analysis of the actual feed shows the cleaned base clearing its processing cost. When the stream is heavily contaminated but thin in recoverable oil, the economics begin to weaken, and the project should be judged on the full test rather than a single number.
