Heat Recovery Steam Generator (HRSG)

Heat Recovery Steam Generator

A heat recovery steam generator, or HRSG, is a specialised boiler that takes exhaust heat from a gas turbine, engine or process and turns it into steam. In a combined-cycle plant it is what turns the turbine’s otherwise-wasted exhaust into a second source of power, and it is the reason such plants achieve efficiencies far beyond a simple-cycle machine.

How an HRSG Works

Hot exhaust gas flows over banks of water-filled tubes inside the HRSG, transferring its heat to raise steam at one or more pressure levels. That steam then drives a steam turbine or serves process duty. Because the heat is already produced by the upstream machine, the HRSG generates steam without burning additional fuel.

Why It Lifts Efficiency

By capturing exhaust energy that would otherwise be vented, an HRSG converts waste heat into additional power or steam, lifting and reducing the fuel intensity of a facility. The same principle that makes combined-cycle gas plants so efficient also applies to any process with a hot exhaust, where an HRSG recovers value from a stream already leaving the process.
