Kuwait Explores End-of-Life Tires as a Circular Feedstock for Road Construction
Rubberized Asphalt
Kuwait is examining recycled tire materials as a feedstock for road construction, with institutions exploring how discarded tires could move from a disposal burden into productive infrastructure use.
Addressing a Warehouse-Scale Tire Problem
The former Al-Rheyya site once held more than 40 million waste tires before they were transferred to Al-Salmi for treatment and recycling. That scale of accumulation has made end-of-life tires a priority for the country, sharpening the case for durable, high-volume outlets that can absorb recovered rubber over the long term.
A Hybrid Discussion on Waste-to-Roads
The Kuwait Green Building Council and the Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research jointly hosted a hybrid lecture and discussion titled “From Waste to Roads.” The session examined how discarded tires could be repurposed into rubberized asphalt and related road applications, positioning the built environment as a potential market for recycled rubber.
Road Building as an Established End Market
Road construction is among the most established destinations for recycled tire rubber. Depending on technical specifications, tire-derived materials can be incorporated into rubberized asphalt and other pavement applications, creating steady demand for waste tire recovery while supporting circular use of rubber resources.
Local Adoption Still Faces Practical Hurdles
Participants discussed the technical, regulatory and procurement conditions that would need to align for local road projects to become a reliable market. The dialogue brought together researchers, policymakers, construction stakeholders and recycling operators, reflecting that scaling rubberized asphalt depends as much on standards and procurement as on material performance.
