Solid recovered fuel, or SRF, is a prepared, specification-controlled fuel made from non-hazardous waste — and shredder residue has the energy profile to serve in exactly that role. At an average 14.3 MJ/kg, the residue carries the calorific value of a genuine fuel feed.

The qualification is preparation. SRF is a controlled product made to a documented specification; raw residue is a feedstock. The value of the SRF framing is that it moves shredder residue from the waste category into the energy category, opening the routes where a fuel can be used.

Fuel Value, Continuously Supplied

What makes shredder residue attractive as an energy feed is its continuity. The shredding industry produces it steadily, year-round, in predictable quantities tied to vehicle and appliance retirement — the opposite of a fuel supply that fluctuates with seasons or markets.

Used in a gasifier designed for the material, that fuel value is captured directly: the residue fires the syngas that generates power, rather than being shipped off-site as a prepared SRF for someone else’s process.
