Advanced Thermal Treatment for ASR: Beyond Basic Incineration

Advanced Thermal Treatment

Advanced thermal treatment is the umbrella for gasification and related oxygen-limited processes that recover more than simple incineration can. For automotive shredder residue, the distinction is the difference between burning the material and converting it.

Basic incineration reduces the residue to heat and ash, releasing its energy and leaving its minerals to be handled as waste. Advanced thermal treatment, by contrast, converts the organic fraction to synthesis gas for power and melts the mineral fraction into a stable, reusable slag while metals are recovered in between.

What Advanced Means in Practice

The reference facility makes the term concrete. Fluidized-bed gasification converts the mixed residue to syngas feeding a 2 x 40 MW thermal platform, while ash melting vitrifies the mineral output into glass aggregate sold to construction. Ferrous and non-ferrous metals, plus zinc-rich filter ash, are recovered as separate products.

That is the hallmark of advanced treatment: every fraction leaves the plant as something useful. Energy, metals, aggregate — the material balance closes with essentially no residual waste to landfill.

Recovery Is the Upgrade

The upgrade from incineration to advanced thermal treatment is fundamentally a move from disposal to recovery. The same feedstock yields power and saleable products instead of ash and emissions, which is why the advanced route defines the future of shredder-residue processing.

Partner With The KleanTeam to Go Beyond Incineration

Safe. Clean. Profitable. One Proven Partner.

Klean Industries built its business on advanced thermal treatment, with a reference plant that converts shredder residue into energy, metals and aggregate rather than burning it to ash.

Klean’s Key Advantages:

  • ✅ An operating ASR gasification reference plant with ash melting, 2 x 40 MW thermal.
  • ✅ Thirty-plus years engineering commercial gasification and waste-to-energy plants.
  • ✅ 3 recovered carbon black (rCB) plants built in India over the past 2 years.
  • ✅ KBR added Klean’s proprietary TyreNova technology to its IP portfolio.
