Axens has been selected by an American investor and project developer to design a unit that upgrades tire pyrolysis oil into low-sulfur fuel.

A Process Design Package for 100% TPO

Axens, a global leader in process technologies for refining, petrochemicals and circular economy applications, will provide a Process Design Package for a hydroprocessing unit designed to process 100% tire pyrolysis oil. The project pairs a local end-of-life tire valorisation facility incorporating pyrolysis technology with a downstream TPO-upgrading unit that will produce low-sulfur fuel for the local market, with a maximum sulfur content of 500 ppm.

Progressing Toward a Final Investment Decision

The project is currently in the FEED phase, with a Final Investment Decision expected in 2027. The design package has been tailored to the project’s specific product quality targets and site conditions, drawing on Axens’ hydroprocessing expertise and catalyst portfolio to maximise operational performance and product quality.

Selected for Alternative Feedstock Experience

In choosing Axens, the developer considered the company’s experience in hydroprocessing and upgrading projects involving alternative feedstocks. The selection builds on a track record of more than 300 proven hydroprocessing references worldwide, spanning applications including distillate hydrotreating, waste lube recycling and waste plastic pyrolysis oil hydroprocessing, with specific capability in addressing tire pyrolysis oil impurity management.
