Pyrolysis Feedstock: Tight Tolerances Drive Higher Yields
Pyrolysis Feedstock
Polish recycler Grupa Recykl, among Europe’s largest feedstock suppliers to the tyre pyrolysis sector, is tightening the tolerances on the material it feeds into pyrolysis plants to lift the quality of the recovered outputs.
Why Pyrolysis Feedstock Quality Matters
Pyrolysis feedstock is rarely a single, uniform material. End-of-life tyres arrive in mixed sizes and constructions, each carrying different levels of steel wire, textile fibre, moisture, and embedded contamination. Left unchecked, that variability flows straight into the reactor, where it shows up as fluctuating oil yields, inconsistent char quality, and accelerated wear on shredders, feeders, and the pyrolysis vessel itself. Tightening feedstock tolerances — the acceptable range of particle size, cleanliness, and composition — is one of the most direct levers an operator has to stabilise output and protect margins. Uniform, well-specified input is what turns pyrolysis from a recovery process into a repeatable manufacturing step.
Minimising Feedstock Tolerances
Grupa Recykl, a Polish recycler that has grown into one of Europe’s largest suppliers of feedstock to the tyre pyrolysis sector, is focused on exactly this problem. In a recent podcast, Recykl’s Head of R&D, Przemyslaw Zprazalski, discussed the company’s work to minimise pyrolysis feedstock tolerances. The aim is a more predictable, better-specified input that lets downstream pyrolysis operators run continuously and reliably, rather than tuning the process around whatever material happens to arrive.
From Tight Tolerances to Recovered Carbon Black
The char left behind after pyrolysis is only ever as valuable as the feedstock that produced it. A cleaner, more consistent feedstock yields a char that can be refined into recovered carbon black with far less effort, helping meet the growing demand for alternatives to virgin carbon black in rubber and plastics compounding. Stable feedstock also supports steadier tyre pyrolysis oil output and cleaner steel recovery, which together strengthen the economics of a full tire pyrolysis project.
Planning for Consistent Pyrolysis Feedstock
For developers weighing a pyrolysis plant, feedstock specification should be settled long before construction begins. Understanding the local tyre supply, the pre-treatment steps required to reach a given tolerance, and what that tolerance means for yield all shape equipment selection and financial projections. Feasibility studies that model feedstock variability from the outset help operators avoid commissioning a plant that cannot reliably deliver its design outputs.

Build a Pyrolysis Plant on a Solid Feedstock Foundation
Tight feedstock tolerances are the quiet foundation of every profitable pyrolysis operation. When the input is predictable, the steel, oil, and recovered carbon black outputs are too.
