The Role of Used Oil Re-Refining in Reducing Carbon Emissions
Re-refining Carbon Emissions
The carbon advantage of re-refining is one of the strongest arguments for investing in it. Producing base oil from used oil skips the most emissions-heavy stages of the crude supply chain, and that difference shows up clearly when you measure the full lifecycle rather than the refinery alone.
Where Virgin Production Emits
Conventional base oil carries emissions from exploration, drilling, and crude transport before refining even begins, and refining itself is intensely energy-hungry. When spent oil is then burned or dumped, the chain releases further pollutants into air, soil, and water. Re-refining avoids most of that upstream load entirely, because the oil has already been produced and only needs cleaning rather than extraction.
The Lifecycle Advantage
Life cycle assessments consistently show re-refined base oil carrying a substantially smaller carbon footprint than virgin stock, since purification consumes far less energy than extraction and initial refining. By recycling a resource already in circulation, every litre of re-refined oil displaces crude that would otherwise be pulled from the ground and refined.
Tackling the Hurdles
Wider adoption still depends on reliable collection networks, consistent feedstock quality, and enough public confidence that re-refined oil performs equally. Feedstock contamination and smaller plant scale can erode the carbon advantage, so the engineering challenge is to keep operations efficient and emissions-controlled at every stage from collection to finished base oil.
