Rotary Kiln Temperature Control & Profiling
Rotary Kiln Temperature Control
Temperature is not a single setting in a rotary kiln; it is a profile. Material enters cool, heats through the drum, reacts, and exits, and each of those stages has its own optimal temperature. Controlling that profile along the length of the kiln is what separates a precisely processed product from a burnt or under-reacted one.
Zones Along the Drum
Kilns are divided into heating zones, each held at a controlled temperature. A feed is dried in the first, raised to reaction temperature in the middle, and allowed to finish or cool in the final zone. In an indirect-fired kiln, the heating shell can be zoned and adjusted independently, giving fine control the length of the drum that a simple single-burner configuration cannot match.
Why Profiling Matters
In pyrolysis, ramping a feed too fast can drive off vapours before the material cracks properly, while overheating burns product or wastes fuel. Profiling the temperature to the material’s reaction curve protects product quality and energy efficiency at once, and paired with residence-time control it gives the operator two levers over the exact same batch.
