Oil Distillation Applications Across the Chemical Industry
Oil Distillation Applications
Distillation separates a used or crude oil into its component fractions by boiling point, and those fractions become a remarkable variety of products. In the chemical industry, oil distillation applications range from regenerating lubricant base oil to making fuels, feedstocks, and even road material, all from the same underlying separation step.
Regenerating Lubricant Base Oil
Used engine and industrial oils carry wear metals, oxides, and degraded additives. Distillation removes these contaminants so the base oil can be restored to a quality that rivals fresh stock, then re-blended into engine, gear, and hydraulic oils. Advanced separation continues to narrow the performance gap between regenerated and virgin base oil.
Producing Fuels and Chemicals
Distilled fractions from waste oil feed clean fuel production, including biodiesel made from waste cooking oil through distillation and transesterification, and lighter cuts that can be blended into gasoline or diesel. The hydrocarbon content of waste oil can also be separated into aromatics, olefins, and other building blocks for plastics, rubber, and synthetic fibres.
Recovering By-products and Heat
Some waste oils yield asphalt after distillation for road construction and waterproofing, while the process itself generates heat that can be recovered for power generation or process heating. Together these oil distillation applications turn what was once a disposal cost into multiple revenue streams and improved energy efficiency.
