Base Oil Recovery Yield: How Distillation and Post-treatment Set the Rate

Base Oil Recovery Yield

In a re-refining plant, the single number that governs profit is how much base oil survives the journey from dirty feedstock to finished product. Base oil recovery yield is not a fixed figure; it is the outcome of feedstock quality, distillation design and the finishing technology chosen after the column.

The Material Balance

Every metric ton of used oil splits into a few predictable streams: regenerated base oil, a light gas-oil or diesel fraction, water and light ends, and an asphalt residue that carries the metals, soot and spent additives. Well-run plants recover the large majority of the feed as base oil, with the balance falling to those by-products, so feedstock contamination directly caps what is achievable.

Why Thin-film Distillation Matters

Heavy lubricants crack if held too long at high temperature, quietly converting would-be base oil into gas and light fuel. A wiped-film or thin-film evaporator under deep vacuum spreads the oil into a turbulent layer that flashes in seconds at reduced temperature, preserving the heavy fractions instead of destroying them. This is the technology that holds recovery near the top of the practical range.

Finishing: Clay Versus Solvent

What happens after distillation moves the yield too. Acid-clay treatment strips colour-forming compounds but the spent clay absorbs a meaningful share of the oil with it, dragging the net output down and creating a hazardous solid. Solvent extraction recovers the selective solvent in a closed loop and loses almost none of the base oil, which is why modern plants favour it.

Variables That Shift the Number

Water and volatile content, additive and soot loading, vacuum stability and pre-treatment all nudge the balance. A wet, heavily-additised feed yields more residue and less base oil; a leaky vacuum forces higher temperatures and more cracking. Controlling these four levers is what keeps base oil recovery yield at the level the business case assumed.
