Australia Extends Product Guarantee of Origin to Biogas and Biomethane

Biomethane Certification

Australia has expanded its Product Guarantee of Origin (PGO) scheme to include biogas and biomethane, giving renewable-gas producers a government-backed certification, according to the country’s Clean Energy Regulator.

Producers, distributors and consumers of biogas produced through anaerobic digestion — and biomethane produced through biogas upgrading — can now apply for PGO certificates. The scheme awards one certificate for each gigajoule of methane produced, and requires producers to account for emissions from electricity and fuel use, feedstock supply, steam use and fugitive emissions where applicable.

Certificates disclose key specifications including methane content, moisture content, feedstock type, and the proportion of feedstock from energy crops, with categories spanning agricultural waste, food waste and wastewater sludge. The regulator said the expansion lets participants make “confident, objective and credible” claims about the origin and emissions profile of their products, and flagged that low-carbon liquid fuels and ammonia could join the scheme later.

The move sits inside a broader Australian push: AUD 1.1 billion ($760 million) under the Cleaner Fuels Programme and a further AUD 3.24 billion for low-carbon liquid fuel projects through 2030.
